A DAY TRIP TO ZLATNI PYASATSI NATURE PARK AND THE MEDIEVAL ALADJA MONASTERY |

Tour program:
In the morning: A walk along a designated nature route in Zlatni Pyasatsi Nature Park.
The park is a picturesque woody area overlooking the Black Sea. It has been designated for the protection of a number of rare plant and animal species, typical for the Black Sea area, as well as for its exceptional natural beauty. The parks territory is covered by natural broadleaf forests, mainly of oak and horn-beam. Twenty plants threatened with extinction (like the Snowdrop, the Caucasian Primrose and different Orchid species), over 70 bird species (Common Buzzard, Goshawk, Hawfinch, Golden Oriole, etc.) and 25 mammal species (Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Badger, etc.) inhabit the area.
At noon we will visit the Aladja Monastery and have a packed lunch there.
Aladja Monastery is the most famous cave monastery on the Black Sea coast and one of the numerous medieval monastic dwellings of the XIII XIV c. It is located in beautiful surroundings and provides excellent panoramic view to the forest and the Black Sea coast below. Together with the nearby Catacombs it forms a historical complex.
In the afternoon we propose a walk on another route in the Park to enjoy beautiful flowers, birds and landscapes.
Optional visit to the Information Centre of the Zlatni Pyasatsi Nature Park.

Tour program:
In the morning: Visit to cape Kaliakra one of the symbols of the Bulgarian northern coast. The site is famous for its archaeological artifacts from the Antiquity and the Middle Ages three fortress walls, remnants of medieval churches, a roman bath and sewage, a late antiquity tomb, a necropolis of cave tombs, etc. It is a scenic area with vertical cliffs rising from the sea and the last remnants of the Bulgarian steppes, which are especially attractive in April and May, when the wild peonies, irises and adonises are in full bloom. Rate birds (Mediterranean Shags, Rosy Starlings, Bee-eaters, Long-legged Buzzards) and dolphins can be seen in the area of the cape too.
In the afternoon: Visit to Yaylata Archaeological Reserve an antic sanctuary (V millennium BC), sacrificial stones, four necropolises of cave tombs, a Byzantine fortress of V VI c. AD, caves used as a monastic complex in the Middle Ages, etc. Enjoying beautiful flowers (wild peonies), birds and landscapes.

In the morning: Visit to the ancient town of Nessebar (about 1.30 h drive along the coast south of Varna). A guided walk in the old part of the town.
The old town of Nessebar is designated as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It occupies s small peninsula in the Black Sea, connected with the coast with a narrow strip of land. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe as it is founded more than 3000 years ago as a fortified Thracian centre, named Messembria. Valuable cultural and historical monuments are preserved in Nessebar an antic fortress wall, many Byzantine churches, over 60 traditional Bulgarian houses, a wind mill and much more.
Lunch in Nessebar; free time for sightseeing and shopping.
In the afternoon: Drive back to Varna via cape Emine - a picturesque cape, where one can enjoy the tranquility of rural landscapes, beautiful scenery and wildlife. A guided walk in the area.

The Madara Horseman is a monumental stone relief from the beginning of the 8th c., the only of its kind in Europe. It is carved at a height of 23 m on a vertical cliff, located on the north-western slope of the Madara Plateau. The depicted scene is triumphal a horseman piercing a lion with his spear and a dog following him. It symbolizes the glory and power of the Bulgarian state at that time. The monument is listed in the UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. A guided walk in the area.

TWO DAYS EXPLORING THE UNESCO CULTURAL HERITAGE IN NORTH-EASTERN BULGARIA |

Day 1: Drive Varna Rousse with visits to the Madara Horseman and the Thracian Tomb in Sveshtari, both UNESCO cultural heritage sites (about 4 hours driving).
The Madara Horseman is a monumental stone relief from the beginning of the 8th c., the only of its kind in Europe. It is carved at a height of 23 m on a vertical cliff, located on the north-western slope of the Madara Plateau. The Thracian tomb of Sveshtari is a unique monument of the Thracian - Hellenistic art of the first half of the 3rd c. BC. It consists of a corridor and three chambers situated in a rectangular and covered by a semi-circular vault. The tomb is a clear evidence of the Thracians contribution to world culture.
Accommodation in the area of Rousse (2* - budget level hotel)
Day 2: Drive Rousse Veliko Turnovo with visits to the Ivanovo Cave Churches and Veliko Turnovo / Arbanassi.
The Ivanovo cave churches are monastic dwellings with chapels, churches and cells carved in the rocks, with 12 14th c. murals still preserved. They are included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage sites and are located in a picturesque river canyon close to the village of Ivanovo, Rousse District.
Lunch en route.
Arbanassi is a settlement, located on a rocky plateau overlooking the old part of the medieval Bulgarian capital Veliko Turnovo. It has been founded in the 13th c. by Bulgarian noblemen and is famous for its fortress-houses and churches, decorated with woodcarving and murals.
Late in the afternoon: drive back to Varna (about 3 hours).

(Cape Kaliakra, Srebarna Nature Reserve, Rusenski Lom Nature Park and the Ivanovo Cave Churches)
Day 1: Departure from the hotel - around: 8.30 9.00 h. Drive from Varna to the Srebarna Lake Nature Reserve via Cape Kaliakra. Arrival at the Cape Kaliakra around 9.30 10.00. A short guided walk, birdwatching and lunch in a restaurant in the area.
The site is famous for its archaeological artifacts from the Antiquity and the Middle Ages three fortress walls, remnants of medieval churches, a roman bath and sewage, a late antiquity tomb, a necropolis of cave tombs, etc. It is a scenic area with vertical cliffs rising from the sea and the last remnants of the Bulgarian steppes, which are especially attractive in April and May, when the wild peonies, irises and adonises are in full bloom. Quite a lot of interesting birds can be seen around Kaliakra: Mediterranean Shag, Stone Curlew, Eagle Owl, Alpine Swift, Calandra Lark, Pied Wheatear, Rose-coloured Starling. Dolphins are possible in the sea.
13.00 - 14.30 h: Drive to Srebarna Lake, where we will have a guided walk till 17.30 -18.00 h.
Srebarna is a picturesque wetland, a UNESCO natural heritage site and the only Bulgarian nesting site for a colony of Dalmatian Pelicans. Here one can see the Pygmy Cormorant, all the European herons, bitterns and egrets, the Ferruginous Duck, the Spoonbill and the Glossy Ibis; the White-tailed Eagle, Red-footed Falcon, Penduline Tit and many other amazing birds.
Accommodation in a hotel or licensed guest-house in the region of Srebarna.
Day 2: Drive to Russenski Lom Nature Park (picturesque river gorges, home to rare birds of prey) with a visit to the UNESCO world heritage site Ivanovo Cave Churches.
The Ivanovo cave churches are monastic dwellings with chapels, churches and cells carved in the rocks, with 12 14th c. murals still preserved. They are included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage sites and are located in a picturesque river canyon close to the village of Ivanovo.
Lunch in the village of Nisovo /or packed lunch/. Afternoon - drive back to the coast. Arrival in Varna late in the afternoon.
